FCBD CT paves the way for FanCon : CT Comic Con

Free Comic Book Day ( FCBD ) is an international event celebrated in comic shops worldwide since 2002. The annual event is held the first Saturday of May, and seeks to promote the medium of comics as a form of entertainment, art, and literature. Currently, over 2000 comic specialty shops all over the world celebrates FCBD and give away specially published comic books for the event - free. Readers Den Comic Shop participated in the very first FCBD in 2002 ( then at the Long Street location ), and for the first few years the store was the only shop in South Africa - indeed in the whole of Africa - to take part in the event. While the Tyger Valley branch celebrates FCBD as a in-store event with free comics and discounts since the store opened in 2012, the event at the Claremont store has morphed into a massive comics and pop culture festival that is a mini comic-con in all but name. The 2014 event took up the entire ground floor of Stadium on Main in Claremont, and was attended by more than 3000 fans, well over a 100 cosplayers, and more than 30 vendors, exhibitors, and comic artists. Artists, vendors, cosplayers and fans from JHB, Durban and PE attended as well, giving the event a decidedly national flavour. Fans look forward to a day of free comics, sales, specials, comic launches, lucky draws, cosplay events, geek merchandise, live performances, console gaming, board gaming, exhibits, demo's, displays and more !
